March 18, 1922 - July 6, 2021
Charlotte Westenberger Charlotte Kincannon Westenberger passed away peacefully at home on July 6, 2021. Born in Memphis on March 18, 1922, to Mary and Andrew A. Kincannon, Jr., Charlotte was educated at Snowden Elementary and Central High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Latin and History from Mississippi State College for Women, now known as Mississippi University for Women. After college, she worked as a flight attendant and in the U.S. Weather Bureau at the Memphis airport during World War II. During that time, she met and married Walter P. Westenberger. They were founding members of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and were devoted to one another until his death in 1981. She was active in the Altar Society, Madonna Circle, Cenacle Retreat League serving as President, and Memphis Cursillo. Charlotte was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and an avid bridge player. When Charlotte lost her father at a young age, her paternal grandfather Dr. A.A. Kincannon became a pivotal figure in her life. He served as President of the Industrial Institute and College (now known as MUW), the Chancellor of the University of Mississippi, and President of the West Tennessee State Normal School (now known as the University of Memphis). From him, she inherited her passion for education and love of reading. Her younger brother Sandy Kincannon, a Memphis artist and educator, inspired her enthusiasm for the arts. She volunteered as a docent at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens and participated in Circle Arts. Charlotte was predeceased by her husband Walter P. Westenberger, brother Andrew “Sandy” A. Kincannon, III, and great-granddaughter Elise Anne Scherrer. She is survived by her five daughters Mary Ann Griesbeck (Billy) of Memphis; Paula Hymel of Hammond, LA; Lisa Page (the late Gary Page) of Atlanta, GA; Emily Blake of Indianapolis, IN; and Carol Baird of Memphis. She also leaves behind 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. The family has held a private graveside service, and a memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 4851 Park Avenue, Memphis, TN 38117, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
