Helen Morris Markwell passed away peacefully in her new home in Germantown on July 29, 2021. She was born on October 17, 1926, in Henderson, TX, to the late Otho and Lavie Morris. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Markwell, Jr., of 71 years. Helen received a BS in Foods and Nutrition and an MS in Dietetics from the University of Tennessee, where she became a member the Chi Omega Sorority and was recently recognized for her 75 years of membership. She was an active member for many years of Christ United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, a church circle leader, president of the United Methodist Women, and a member of the administrative board. Helen served as a member of the Le Bonheur Club, Le Bonheur Travel Study Club, Women’s Exchange, Circle of Flowers Garden Club, Memphis Symphony League, and the Opera Guild. Helen is survived by three children, Kenneth Markwell, III (Ellen), of Germantown, TN, Scott Markwell (Cindy) of Roanoke, VA, and Nancy Markwell of Yucca Valley, CA, as well as six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Her two sisters, Dorothy Baker (Ross) and Betty Ann Purdie survive her. Her only brother, Dr. A. E. Morris, predeceased her. She was well known amongst family and friends for her delicious homemade rolls, and proud that a former governor’s wife once requested the recipe. She always thought of others in their time of need baking delicious meals and delivering them. She regularly wrote special notes and cards to her many friends and family. She was a frequent world traveler and enjoyed ballroom dancing. A private service celebrating her life was held.
