May 26, 1944 - December 11, 2021
Katherine (Kay) Gardner McVean died peacefully on December 11, 2021, surrounded by her four children. In addition to being a devout Catholic, Kay was a loving wife, mother and friend. She enjoyed volunteering in the community where she was able to help others. She started her volunteer career at the Junior League of Memphis where she worked on a variety of projects including a cookbook production and the Hemophiliac Camp. A few of her favorite volunteer jobs were spending every Wednesday as the Volunteer Director of the Orthopedic Clinic at St. Jude Hospital, cooking and serving meals weekly at Holy Names’ Soup Kitchen and Birthright. After being a patient at M.D. Anderson twice, Kay found her passion helping other patients navigate treatment and the complexities associated with a cancer diagnosis. She not only guided others through this process, she also helped raise money for MD Anderson and the Hagemeister/ McVean Research Fund. Additionally, she was a patient and supporter of the Mayo Clinic. Kay traveled the world in her younger years with friends and family. In more recent years, her favorite travel time was spent in Florida or Michigan. She especially enjoyed having her children and grandchildren visit her there. Kay was born on May 26, 1944 in Houston, TX. She graduated High School from St. Agnes Academy in Memphis, TN and went on to study at the University of Alabama. She eloped with the love of her life, Charles D. McVean (Chas to her) on October 31, 1964. Kay (known as Kaki to the family) is survived by her four children, Katherine Kaelin (Bill), Courtney McVean, Dow McVean , Jr.(Nikki), and Gwen Coffey (Jordan), eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and her four siblings, Robert Gardner, Jr. (Ellen), Gail Gardner, Gwen Ribe and Elaine Ryder. She is predeceased by her parents, Katherine Highams Gardner and Robert Goodwyn Gardner, and her loving husband, Charles Dow McVean. The funeral service will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at 2:00 PM. The family would like to thank her wonderful caretakers and the team of doctors and nurses at Baptist East Memorial Hospital for their kind and loving care. In lieu of flowers, the Family asks that any donations be made to the Peer Power Foundation (850 Ridge Lake Boulevard, Suite 1, Memphis, TN 38120 - PeerPowerFoundation.org).
