Nancy Clayton Beard Menzies died peacefully in her home on May 2. Nancy was born in Marion, Arkansas on June 19, 1937 to Marguerite Beck Beard and William Beck Beard. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Virginia Beck Brick, Betty Beck Crowhurst, and Joyce Beck Anderson. She is survived by her husband Rodgers Menzies; two daughters, Ginger Menzies Kelly (Chris) and Meg Menzies (Jeff Flaherty); three granddaughters, Clayton Kelly, Kendall Kelly Schottenfeld (Sam), and Mary Rodgers Rudolph; two grandsons, Griffin Rudolph and Christopher Kelly; nephew David Brick (Tracy) and niece Allison Brick Heazu (Mike). Nancy attended Marion High School and Miller Hawkins, where she learned the considerable financial and business skills, she was noted for throughout her life. Nancy and Rodgers met at Brick Muller Advertising Agency, fell in love and were married on December 28, 1958. They celebrated 62 years of a storybook marriage last December. In addition to her career, Nancy was an active member in the community. She delivered Meals on Wheels, she was active in The Duration Club, LeBonheur Hospital, and The Woman’s Exchange. She was a member of the Tuesday Study Club, the Arawata Garden Club, Brooks Museum, Decorative Arts Trust, and Dixon Gallery and Gardens. Nancy and Rodgers shared a great love for the performing arts, and both generously gave their time and talents to Memphis Symphony League, Opera Memphis, and Theatre Memphis. When Rodgers decided to open his design business, Nancy joined him in a partnership that carried them around the world as they made many trips to England, France, Italy, and the Far East. Together, they gathered unique accessories, fabrics, and furniture, which made Rodgers Menzies Interior Design so successful. Nancy will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her warm heart, her exceptional style, her great taste, and her delightful personality. The family would like to thank all those that helped Nancy throughout her illness. Dr. Van Rushing and staff, Dr. Steve Akins, Georgia Mims, and the women of S.O.S. A private service and interment will be held at Grace St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, May 6, at 1 pm. A Celebration of Her Life, to which her many friends are invited to attend, will be held at 2:30 at the University Club. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Opera Memphis, Theater Memphis, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
