January 8, 1927 - May 3, 2021
Peggy Laughter Pera passed away peacefully on Monday, May 3, 2021. Born on January 8, 1927 in Helena, Arkansas, Peggy was the beloved only daughter of Genevieve Aste Laughter and Lucian Caldwell Laughter. Peggy loved music and education and she lived her life surrounded by both. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Memphis and received her Bachelor of Music from Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College). While at Southwestern, she studied performance piano with Myron Myers. Peggy went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts in Music at University of Mississippi and a Masters of Education from University of Memphis. She also studied sacred choral music at University of Windsor, in Windsor, Canada. After completing her education, Peggy took an exciting opportunity to become a flight attendant on Chicago & Southern Airlines (now Delta Airlines) and flew their new international routes out of New Orleans to Havana, Cuba, and Caracas, Venezuela. Peggy spent the remainder of her long career teaching in the Memphis City Schools and in private piano instruction. Peggy’s talent as choirmaster and organist filled the sanctuaries of many of the Catholic churches of Memphis; including St. Peter Catholic Church, St. Paul Catholic Church, Church of the Incarnation, and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Peggy was a member of the American Guild of Organists, Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, and Sigma Alpha Iota, an international music fraternity. She leaves her daughter, Kate (Buddy Gaynor) and son, Lucian (Jane Van Deren) and her treasured grandsons, Gordon and Franklin. The family wants to thank the staff of Ave Maria/St. Clare Home, especially Peggy’s wonderful caregivers; Nevada, Denise, Gloria, Pam, and Walter. Memorials in Peggy’s memory can be sent to Rhodes College, St. Patrick Catholic Church, or the Orpheum Theatre Group. The service celebrating the life of Peggy Pera will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 14, 2021, at St Patrick Catholic Church, Memphis. Visitation to begin at 10:00 a. m. in the church prior to the funeral mass. Due to COVID-19, masks are required and please practice social distancing when in the church.
